The Majestic Churndash Quilt Sew Along

Majestic Churndash

The time has come for our FREE Sew Along called The Majestic Churndash!  The size of this single quilt block quilt truly makes this majestic!  The finished quilt top size is 54.5" square without a border.  You can add a 6" border for it to finish at 64" square.

The churndash block is actually my favorite quilt block ever.  I made a churndash quilt a couple of years ago for a client - made from her mother's knit garments that she made herself.  It was truly an honor to make the memory quilt for her.

If you follow me on Facebook - this image below may look familiar to you.

I've been in a patriotic mode lately & after seeing so many beautiful quilts made in reds, whites, & blues this year...I decided this had to be mine.

If you would like to join us in making this super quick & VERY EASY quilt pattern - here are the fabric requirements for you.

We used Red, White, & Blue...only 3 fabrics total.

I pulled:

1.5 yards for Red,

5/8 yard of White,

2.25 yards for Blue (border included).

Once I had the fabrics pulled - I usually sit and stare at it on my counter for a week to confirm that's the fabrics I want to use.  I'm just like that.  Are you?  I used a flat white fabric, a blue star batik from Island Batiks called Stars-French Blue from their Americana line, & a red/white picnic plaid print from Maywood Studio.  I know....I mixed regular quilting cottons & batiks and you know what?  I had no problems at all...and I've done it before so it didn't scare me.  Don't let it scare you too!  This is the perfect project to experiment with mixing batiks into your quilt project.

Ready to cut?

The center square is 18.75" square.  This was blue for me.

Cut 2 squares that are 19" square from Red.

Cut 2 squares that are 19" square from Blue.

Cut 4 rectangles that measure 18.5" x 9.5" from White.

Cut 4 rectangles that measure 18.5" x 9.5" from Red.

Ready to sew?

Take a Red rectangle and a White rectangle.  Right sides together and sew down one long side of the rectangles.  Press the seam open.  Repeat with the rest of the rectangles.

Ready for the next step? Let's make those huge half square triangles for all 4 of our corners.

Take 1 square of the Red & 1 square of the Blue.  Place them right sides together.

Pin around the squares on all 4 sides.

Then take your large ruler & your marking pencil.  I'm using a Sewline Trio pencil here...

Mark your diagonal line across the square one time as shown.

Sew a quarter inch seam on both sides of the diagonal line across your square.

Cut on the diagonal line.  Press your seams to the dark fabric.

Square and trim your new squares to 18.5" square.  It may be that you only need to trim a tiny bit to get the size correct.

Be careful to trim and square keeping your diagonal line in the exact center of your square.  If you have a large cutting mat - this would be a great time to use it.

Repeat this process with the other Red & Blue squares.  Then you will have all 4 corner HST (half square triangles).

Now you are ready to piece the top together!  You have 3 rows to sew together like a 9 patch block.

Since Row 1 & 3 are the same - it's easiest to do them right together.

This will help avoid seam direction confusion.  Note the arrows are showing which direction to sew the blocks - they are opposite for showing seam direction.

TAAA-DAHHHH!  What do you think?  I just love mine!  The fabrics made it very easy for me to fall in love with the quilt without borders - but I do know some people would want to add the borders just to increase the size of the quilt a bit.  Some may want a border just for a more finished look.  It's totally up to you!  Remember, the quilt police have been fired a long time ago.  I gave them their pink slips long, long ago!

Mine is already at the longarm quilter getting its final touches.  I'm having it quilted in FabuLux Parade by Wonderfil Specialty Threads - a Red, White, & Blue thread perfect for quilting!  I can't wait to show it off!

Have fun!  I hope you enjoy this sew along as much as I did - and be sure to tag us when you share your beautiful new Majestic Churndash quilt!  #majesticchurndash #sewmuchcharm
