January 2019 Block of the Month (in detail…)

As many of you have noticed, I have started a new Block of the Month club to enhance my own sewing skills, by going back to the basics of sewing!

I’m very excited to start this and excited to have everyone sew with me!  I also thought this would be a good way for beginning quilters to join in the fun too!  For this entire year, the quilt blocks selected will build upon each other in skills and technique to slowly grow our quilt block sampler quilt that we will have ready at the end of the year!  I have been dying to do a sampler quilt like this, so why not now?

For January, I selected the Arrowhead Puzzle Quilt Block, or AKA Garlic Knots…It’s a simple quilt block, but don’t let this deter you in you making it.  Not only does this quilt block help you practice your cutting skills (all squares are the same size), but you can also practice chain piecing and matching your points when you sew.

I’ve always wanted a bright color popping quilt…of my own.  Crazy, right?  I’ve never made myself a quilt.  I will this year.  #2019goal

So I searched through my bags of scraps and small pieces of fabrics stash and found 3 fabrics that particularly spoke to me for this quilt block…no, not the purple tones that you have seen on my Instagram page…or the Facebook page.  I’m talking about the bright lime green, blues, and red!  Have you seen it?  Here it is…

Now ignore my ugly ironing board cover from the 90s (another #2019goal is to recover it in an awesome fabric)…while you admire the colors.  I plan on using these colors for the rest of the year with my personal quilt blocks.  Feel free to find your inspiration for the year too!  This is going to be great fun!

Ahhh!  This picture doesn’t even do it justice!

For those new to quilting…how do we put this sucker together?  It’s simpler than you think…

Here’s what you do:

First– Layout the squares in the pattern where you can see the whole block.

Second– Sew across (the row) in pairs.  So you will have two sets of two squares sewn together, like this.

Be sure to press the seams to “set them”.  Do this every time you sew a seam together.

Third– Sew across the row now sewing the two pairs together to form one row.  Then continue sewing all the rows across until you have 4 rows.

Fourth-Place the very top row face down on the row underneath it (flipping it) to match the seam (and points) for sewing across.  This should sew the top two rows together.  Continue with row 3 & 4.  Now you have two sections of the block.  Section 1 is rows 1 and 2 sewn together.  Section 2 is rows 3 & 4 sewn together.

Fifth– Sew the two halves together.  You may need to pin them together, as I did.

Press your final seam open and PERFECTO!  You have your first block of the month completed in less than 5 minutes!  This is amazing and super fun!

Now if you are like me, you will probably get super excited about making these blocks…and when I get excited, I tend to make mistakes.  So I had to pull out the seam ripper earlier to correct this error!

OOPS!  We all make mistakes…so don’t fret if you make a few.
We are all on this journey together!
How many Arrowhead Puzzle Blocks will you make?

Are there templates for the squares? Or what size they are supposed to be? I can't find that answer. Thank you.

Hi there! This is a great question! Each block is 3.5” square. I used the AccuQuilt die to make the squares.
