August Block of the Month – We’re Churning Out Blocks!

This month is going to be an easy CHURNDASH quilt block.  This is a very common block among traditional sampler quilts.  So I think we should have one…Have you made one before?  I can honestly say that I have not…until NOW!

After reviewing the block, I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to make one!

I reviewed quite a bit of sampler quilts and traditional quilt blocks for this quilt top.  This block looks great with any 2 color combination or 3 or even 4 colors!  I just love it.  In fact, next month’s BOM at my local quilt guild will be this churndash block in black and white fabric combinations with a touch of red….

Let’s Talk Numbers!

I’m using my trusty AccuQuilt fabric cutter!  I did have someone tell me that the measurements I gave for those who didn’t have an AccuQuilt were not working…so I double-checked and like Santa, I checked it twice.  Here’s what I noticed…Using finished measurements and adding the seam allowance does not always work.

For this block, I’m using 3 dies from the 8″ Cube.

Die 1 is a Square that measures 4.5″. I did measure this die and it does measure 4.5″ square.

Die 8 are  Rectangles that measure 2.5″ x 4.5″. This measurement is accurate to use without the AccuQuilt.

Die 3 is a Half Square Triangle from a 4″ Finished Square. However, when I measure this block, I measure 4 13/16″ across the tape measure.  See this picture?

After laying out your pieces, which, by the way, how fast was that to cut out so few pieces! Remember to press your seams after each step!  Press to the darker fabric tone/color.

Step 1: Layout your pieces!

It looks huge!  Unsewn it measured 14″.  After sewing it all together, she meets the 12.5″ block size that we need for our BOM Sampler Quilt Top!

Step 2: Sew the Half Square Triangles into Squares.

You will have a total of 4 squares when finished for each corner.

Step 3: Sew the Rectangles Together!

You will have 4 blocks like this picture.

Step 4: Sew Across Each Row!

Be sure to press your seams flat.

Step 5: Sew the Rows Together!

This picture shows the top and middle row sewn together.

Pressing your seams is very important in this block.

Also you will want to pay attention to which direction they are going as you match seams sewing the rows together.  If they are both in the same direction, you may want to press one seam the other way to have a flatter seam.

Sewing this whole block happened in less than 10 minutes.  I probably could have had it done faster without the kids interrupting.  In fact, I know I could have had it sewn in about 5 minutes without interruptions.

This is a great beginner block and it is just an awesome addition to our Sampler Quilt!  I hope you do think so!

I’m in love with how it is coming together.  I laid out the blocks we’ve made this year and I think it’s going to be amazing!  I’m really enjoying this and hope you are too!

Happy Quilting!
